APA Question

Q: What is a block quotation? When should I use it?

APA Answer

A:

A block quotation is used when citing a direct quotation that is more than 40 words.  It is called a block quotation because of the special formatting required by APA for quotations of more than 40 words.

Rules for formatting a block quotation:

  • Do not use quotation marks with a block quote.
  • Start a block quotation on a new line and indent the whole block 0.5 inches from the left margin.
  • Double-space the entire block quotation.
  • Return to standard paragraph indenting after the quote.
